Letters to the Editor
Submitted 10/27/2006: Everyone, please vote.
Don't become over confident and complacent. Vote on November 7th. Vote out the lying Bush cronies. We now have the opportunity to reset the disastrous course our nation is pursuing.
Bernie Sanders, Peter Welch, and Scudder Parker, all need our support now. Everyone, please vote, it's our democracy. Preserve it and let's wrestle power from this criminal minded group that have hijacked our nation.
Remember, friends don't let friends vote Republican!

Printed 09/14/2006: I Love Free Speech
In this time of deteriorating civil liberties we must vote to retain a most important right, free speech. I love free speech. I love to see businesses exercise their right to free speech. I love seeing these huge political signs in front of businesses so I know where not to spend my money. Remember, fight to retain your basic freedoms and vote for Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch this November.

Printed 07/31/2006: Be Scared
It certainly appears like our Vermont Republicans continue to march in
lockstep with their Washington based bosses. Since the NSA domestic spying case broke I have been attempting, through e-mails, the useless VT GOP web site, and telephone calls to get an answer to one specific question. My inquiries have been totally ignored or if I was able to get in contact with a warm Republican body I was told someone would get back to me. No one ever has. The question: "Do you support investigations into the legality of the NSA domestic wiretaps and if they are found to be illegal would you support the prosecution of the officials responsible?"
Why don't you try to get candidates Tarrant or Rainville to answer you? If you put them on the spot will their answer be honest and well thought through? Please publish your results here in the BFP so we all know. I asked candidates Sanders and Welch the same question and received very complete and thoughtful answers. This is not a partisan issue; it involves our basic freedoms under our Constitution.
The Republicans have succeeded, I am now scared. I'm scared that if we can't produce a resounding enough victory to overcome our currently fraud ridden election system, we will have more years of this corrupt Republican regime. Our basic freedoms are continuing to erode and our country is continuing to spiral downward under their inept, lying, self-serving leadership in both the Congress and the Executive. The terrorists are winning as our democracy implodes. I hope everyone will be scared enough to vote in 2006 and 2008.

Printed 12/13/2004: Incensed by War
How can any caring and compassionate individual not be emotionally moved by the Vermont National Guard troop deployments to Iraq? It is heart wrenching to see all these men and women leaving their families, loved ones, homes, and jobs to go where they must act as insurgents in a preemptive attack against a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us or our way of life.
I cannot understand why more people are not incensed by this war and its mounting toll. Can't we support our troops enough to demonstrate against their being emotionally scarred, maimed, or killed in this unnecessary war? How many American deaths will there be before action is taken to stop this lunacy? Apparently the tens of thousands of Iraqi deaths and the destruction of a civilization are not counted as a worthy enough catastrophe.
Another interesting and evolving news item we've been hearing lately: "The war in Afghanistan was a big success." Excuse me, what was the objective and reason for us going into Afghanistan? It was to capture and/or kill Osama bin Laden. Our objective has not been achieved. This action has not been a success!

Printed 11/07/2004: World Tragedy
Nov. 2, 2004, was a World Day of Tragedy. Prior to that date, half our nation knew what an arrogant, ignorant, sanctimonious, and undemocratic country we were becoming. Now that half, and the entire rest of the world, knows that is what we are.
We must all support the hardworking, relentless Americans who challenge the insanity of this self-serving regime. Our responsibility as citizens is to stay informed, articulate, and to demonstrate for our needs. Our greatest failing as a nation would be widespread apathy. That is how fanatics, like this gang of incompetents, get and keep power. This is little consolation for those who have died defending this nescient, lying administration.
Kerry's concession in the election without the votes being counted creates voter apathy. There was a chance our presidential election was again won by the Democrats! Moments earlier John Edwards was promising all votes would be counted. A vote for John Kerry was a wasted vote. This is worse than losing the election. Think of all who worked and donated time and money to insure every vote would be counted. Thousands of our citizens stood in line for hours in inclement weather to vote for no reason because their candidate conceded without their vote being counted. What has happened to our democracy?

Printed 01/22/2004: Let Down by AARP
I am amazed AARP Grassroots recently had the nerve to inform members, "AARP Announces Rx Next Steps." AARP sold out seniors and members with their support of the last prescription drug bill. They provided Republicans fuel for their campaign at our expense. We dont need Rx Next Steps, we needed AARP full support to have this legislation right the first time. As a long time AARP member I have come to realize they are no different than all the other corporate groups that care little about their constituents real needs but care greatly about their own personal special interests.

Burlington VTComment 01/27/04: Medicare bill worthless I agree wholeheartedly with Frank Romary's letter ``Let down by AARP'' (Jan. 22). The AARP helped Congress pass a Rx bill which is almost worthless. Medicaid, with its enormous bargaining power, is forbidden to negotiate with the drug companies for lower prices. Why is this if not to help the drug companies continue to reap huge profits? About the only thing the bill accomplishes is to allow the politicians to ballyhoo the fact that they passed some Rx <snipped>

Printed 05/08/2000: Burlington Cable Debacle
Hurrah again to the Vermont House! The Burlington Mayors quote in Saturdays BFP concerning the Burlington cable plan, Its insulting! Its outrageous! And it makes you wonder what theyre thinking, is right on. Indeed, we often wonder what the Mayor and city council are thinking. So, Mr. Mayor, and other proponents of socialized industry, how many Burlington tax payer dollars have been squandered in the attempt to sell this ill-conceived and poorly planned scheme? Future plans of this nature should be investigated prior to submission to the voters.

Burlington VTComment 2005: Since the Adelphia Cable scandal, and the exaggerated increase in home cable rates, I have done a 180° opinion shift on this issue. I now fully support the Burlington Telecom plan and look forward to having access to it in my area.

Printed 02/25/2000: Stop Pandering
Now that the voters of Burlington have spoken, is it not time for the city council to do what is right for the citizens of downtown Burlington? The Burlington City Council needs to stop pandering to their special interests! Considering the unethical way the supermarket question was worded on the ballot this should be thought of as a big loss for the city council.
Let's give the citizens living in the downtown area, and in the old north end, a supermarket that will give them the best possible grocery selection at the lowest possible prices. At election time, many voters will not look kindly on any elected city official who chooses their own special interest over what is right for the disadvantaged people of Burlington.
Let me clarify, I do not have any connection whatsoever with the Onion River Co-op or Shaw's Supermarket. I have not previously spoken about this issue.
Please swallow your pride and admit the people are right!
